Are you in your senior years of high school, or recently graduated? If so, you're probably thinking a lot about your career. While many high school students will choose to continue their studies at university, this isn't the only option for creating a rewarding career.
If you're passionate about working with children, a qualification in childcare might be the best option for you.
A qualification in childcare combines both online and workplace training and can be completed while you’re working. You can even get started while you're still in high school.
If you’re eligible, a qualification in childcare can also be fee-free.
Here's what you need to know about fee-free childcare courses in Queensland.
Fee-free childcare training for trainees and apprentices
To become an early childhood educator in Australia, you need to have completed (or be in the process of completing) a formal qualification in childcare: either a CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care or a CHC50113 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care.
In the past, eligible Queensland high school graduates were able to complete a Certificate III through their chosen Registered Training Organisation (RTO) for free.
Although this incentive is no longer on offer, you still may be able to access fee-free childcare training through your chosen RTO by completing a traineeship or apprenticeship.
Free apprenticeships for under 25s
The initiative is called Free Apprenticeships for Under 25s. Funded by the Queensland Government, it allows students to undertake high priority apprenticeships and traineeships for free if they start training before 30 September 2022. The name reveals the crux — it's only on offer to students under the age of 25.
As apprenticeships and traineeships in childcare are considered high priority, both a CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (as a traineeship) and a CHC50113 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care (as an apprenticeship) are included in the initiative.
So, if you're under 25 and eligible, you can study either of these qualifications fee-free as a trainee or apprentice.
How do I know if I am eligible for fee-free childcare training?
Because every situation is unique, you should chat with your chosen training organisation to find out if you are eligible to complete a childcare apprenticeship or traineeship for free.
At the very least, you must:
- permanently reside in Queensland
- be under the age of 25 when you commence your apprenticeship or traineeship.
Even if you're not eligible for fee-free training, you still may be eligible for funding. Simply complete our eligibility form here to find out.
