An increase in the number of children attending children’s services due to a general increase in the demand for child care, makes the early childhood one of the most in-demand professions.

According to Job Outlook, an initiative of the Department of Employment that provides data in relation to trends and employment prospects for particular occupations; there are currently over 36,000 early childhood teachers in Australia. The five years to November 2019, the number of job openings for early childhood educators is expected to average between 10,001 and 25,000. Job openings count both employment growth and turnover (defined as workers leaving their occupation for other employment or leaving the workforce).

Early childhood education equips children with the skills and capacity to be effective and engaged learners through to school and beyond. Some roles involve working directly with children, such as educators or working indirectly with children or non-contact roles, such as centre manager, that oversees the day-to-day running of the service.

Four – Challenge yourself

Working in the early childhood provides opportunities to work across various roles and advancement within the industry, they may include centre support roles, such as area or operations manager; administration, consultative, early childhood training or overseeing quality and compliance.

Five – Make a difference

Education in the early years (under five) is crucial for brain and the overall physical, cognitive and language development of children. Educators have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of young children by providing quality experiences in early childhood education and care services, that are central in developing children’s health, well-being and learning.
